An OnlyFans model who fatally stabbed her boyfriend in Miami has been arrested in Hawaii and is set to be extradited for second-degree murder, authorities have said.
Courtney Clenney, 26, has been charged with second-degree murder with a deadly weapon for the April 3 stabbing of her boyfriend Christian “Toby” Obumseli, Miami-Dade County District Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle announced Thursday.
Rundle described the couple’s relationship, which began in November 2020, as “extremely tumultuous and combative”. She noted that the management of the building where Clenney and Obumseli lived had documented several instances of loud arguments and were prepared to evict the couple before Obumseli’s death.
Clenney had evicted Obumseli from their apartment the last week of March, but the couple apparently reconciled two days before he died.
Investigators believe Obumseli was stabbed between 4:33 p.m. and 4:57 p.m. on April 3, Rundle said. Keychain recordings show him leaving the apartment shortly after 1 p.m. and returning to the building at 4:32 p.m.
Shortly after, neighbors began calling building security to report a disturbance in their apartment, and security called police around 4:46 p.m., according to Rundle.
Police found Clenney made two calls to her mother during that time, before calling 911 herself at 4:57 p.m. asking for help for Obumseli.
“During this 911 call, Christian can be heard in the background. We repeatedly say he was saying and he was losing sensation and his arm,” Rundle said. “Defendant Clenney is also heard saying, ‘I’m so sorry. “”
In a statement to police, Clenney’s mother said she heard her daughter yelling at Obumseli to leave the apartment while she was on the phone with her.
Clenney told police that after an argument, Obumseli grabbed her by the throat and pushed her against a wall.
“Then she says he knocked her down but allowed her to get up,” Rundle said, recounting the Clenney interview. “And that’s when Clenney went into a kitchen and retrieved the knife as Christian approached her. She threw the knife at him an estimated distance of about 10 feet.”
A medical examiner’s report said Obumseli’s stab wound was caused by a “powerful downward thrust”. Rundle said the chief medical examiner disagreed that a throw from that distance could have caused Obumseli’s fatal stab wound.
“Police observed no visible injuries, which would have supported their account,” Rundle said.
Clenney was arrested by the Hawaii Police Department on Wednesday while in rehabilitation for substance abuse and post-traumatic stress disorder, her attorney Frank Prieto said, confirming comments first reported by the Miami Herald. .
She was being held at the East Hawai’i Detention Center and was scheduled to appear in local district court for the first time on Thursday, the department said. Rundle said Clenney’s attorney indicated she would not contest his extradition to Florida.
In a statement, Prieto, who previously described the couple’s relationship as “clearly toxic”, said he was “completely shocked” by Clenney’s arrest due to the “clear evidence of self-defense in this case”.
“Obumseli attacked and strangled her that night,” he said. “Courtney had no choice but to meet the force with the force.”
Rundle accused Clenney of being the aggressor in the couple’s tumultuous relationship.
Rundle showed an elevator video from February 2022, a month after the couple moved into their apartment, in which Clenney appears to launch a physical assault on Obumseli during an argument. It is unclear what happened until the couple entered the elevator.
“You will draw your own conclusion, but it certainly appears that the defendant was aggressively attacking Christian,” Rundle said.
Larry Handfield, an attorney representing Obumseli’s family, said news of a charge against Clenney was a relief for the family. He also accused Clenney of having “a history of abuse” throughout the couple’s relationship.
“What you saw in the elevator was just an isolated glimpse of a pattern of conduct that was demonstrated by the defendant in this case,” Handfield said.
A cousin of Obumseli previously said the family had “no reason to believe it was a case of self-defence”, adding: “Toby was raised by a very strong family, with morals. strong, strong values. It doesn’t come from this.”
Clenney appeared on OnlyFans as Courtney Tailor and has 2 million Instagram followers.
